General Definition of Work

• Performs intermediate skilled trades work performing vehicle maintenance, repairing vehicle damage, cleaning and maintain shop, performing dispatcher duties, responding to after hour or emergency requests, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Transportation.

Essential Functions

• Diagnose minor and frequently occurring mechanical problems.
• Install air, oil, water and other filters on vehicles.
• Install shock absorbers.
• Replace wiper blades and fan belts.
• Replace brake linings on buses and various vehicles.
• Test and repair electrical systems.
• Drain and clean radiators.
• Inspect exterior and interior of vehicles for defects.
• Remove, repair and replace transmissions, clutches, fuel, oil and water pumps and other major engine parts as well as entire engine assemblies.
• Repair, replace and paint vehicles.
• Test headlight alignment and make necessary adjustments.
• Test and replace batteries on various vehicles as needed.
• Check and repair doors and wheelchair lifts on buses.
• Repair and replace seat belts.
• Repair and replace broken windows.
• Perform general maintenance as needed.
• Perform 30-day inspections.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Director of Transportation
• Cleans and maintains shop, tools and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• General knowledge of the operation and repair of components, systems and accessories of school buses, district vehicles and equipment.
• General knowledge of tools and equipment including gauges, machinery and shop equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of transit equipment
• Skill in the use of computers and standard office equipment
• Ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted parts
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations
• Ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software
• Ability to learn specialized equipment and software based on district needs

 

 

 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED and five years progressive job experience.
• Working knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance.
• Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, fuel dispensing, vehicle body repair, etc.
• Skill in operating various machines in repairing vehicles.
• Ability to physically perform major and minor repairs.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Good working knowledge of diesel engines required.
• Extensive experience and training with vehicle operation, maintenance and repair is required.
• Considerable knowledge of the operating principals of internal combustion engines.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods used in repairing electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment.

Physical Requirements

• This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force
• Must be able to step up and down repeatedly and get in and out of vehicles.
• Must be able to access “underneath” school buses and other vehicles to change oil, grease, and service, etc.
• Work regularly requires standing, walking using hands to finger, handle or feel, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires sitting.
• Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and/or around Hazardous Materials such as: automotive batteries, automatic transmission fluid, anti-freeze, etc.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather).
• Exposure to the risk of electrical shock
• Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

• Must hold or be able to obtain North Carolina Vehicle Inspection Certification and 30-day Bus Inspection Certification (within 6 months of employment).
• Must hold or acquire a North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with P & T

endorsement (within 30 days of employment).

• Must Register in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse
