NATURE OF THE WORK
The substitute teacher creates an encouraging learning environment while the regular teacher is absent. The substitute teacher manages and instructs the class and is responsible for the daily attendance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
- Pass a criminal background check
- High School Diploma, Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or Doctoral Degree. Pay is based on educational level.
- Knowledge of classroom structures and procedures
- New substitutes who have NOT previously completed the ETT training or do not hold a teaching certificate must take and pass the Effective Substitute Teacher Training Course. The district pays for this course. Please contact Ms. Valerie Burrus at 252-796-1121 ext. 412 to register and take the course. The district will pay for the course.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
- Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
- Supervise the students inside and outside of the classroom, including on the playground, in the halls and in the cafeteria
- Provide class assignment and homework based on the available lesson plan
- Long term substitutes will develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans
